GARAGE: Bad Dream Adventure

Originally release in 1999, GARAGE is a point and click game "designed by Japanes surrealist Tomomi Yuki Sakuba" (Wikipedia). The version I played had a fan translation to English, but much of the UI and environment text remained in Japanese, so it was admittedly difficult to navigate. Partly for this reason, I never actually completed the game.

GARAGE is incredibly labrynthine, with countless halls and rooms to explore. I found this quality to be pretty frustrating tbh, mainly because the character dies within a certain amount of time, unless you collect essential resources from the right areas.

Due to my struggle to ascertain the plot and the goals of the character, I found myself content to just aimlessly explore the environments. The grim, industrial aesthetic took me to a very specific place emotionally. It felt like I was wandering through a place that was long-neglected, where its few remaining inhabitants were still there because they had nowhere else to go. This, paired with the mopey accordion music that played in almost every area, made me feel like I was in a European fishing village, except all the fish had died from water pollution and there were no longer any jobs.

The character design is what stands out the most about this game. The semi-organic humanoids are truly disturbing, looking like a cross between fish, fetuses, and possesed dolls. That's definitely where the game feels its most surreal. The main character is just as disturbing as the people you interact with, making it admittedly harder to empathize with it. It's also half-mechanical, with wheels instead of feet. These wheels are connected to a rail, and your only way to navigate the city is by going along the tracks. The lack of freedom of movement is somewhat unsettling, as it makes the main character tethered to the unpleasant environment they're in.

I'd recommend giving the game a go just to immerse yourself in the ambience. Try not to get frustrated at the confusing story and layout, and just explore the surreal nightmare of GARAGE.
